SOBU is proud to be featuring collages by Marin-based artist Amy Torgeson! Amy works in printmaking and collage, and revels in the collaborative relationship between the two methods at play in her process. Printmaking provides the material for collage, and in turn the collages take on the ihnerent dimensionality and texture of prints.
Her work is influenced by nature, textiles, and the colors and textures gathered through travelling. You may also notice that typography serves as a starting point in her process, providing the structure and graphic quality that Amy seeks to explore. An experimental approach keeps her process free and exploratory. Part of the intrigue of Amy’s work is the evidence of her process that is present in each piece. She strives for sense that her works are exploratory and alive, even when finished. Her prints and collages reflect a modern, abstract sensibility and often focus on the direct experience of color, shape, line, and pattern.
Amy spent ten years teaching writing and art at arts organizations, after school programs, and to college students. Today, she teaches hand block-printing and cyanotype workshops from her studio in Sausalito. She lives in Marin with her husband and two children.
